The four mile long, ten foot wide asphalt trail connects from the Warrensburg East Hale Lake Road trail, previously constructed with Federal Highway Administration funds in 1996 and 2000, to the Knob Noster State Park Boundary just east of Bristle Ridge. Located in the right of way of State Highway DD in the north central part of Johnson County, the trail provides separate bicycle and pedestrian travel along State Highway DD.

The Johnson County Trail Coalition was formed in July 2012 with the goal of exploring alternative transportation opportunities County-wide. The coalition is made-up of individuals representing the City of Warrensburg, University of Central Missouri (UCM), Whiteman AFB, Knob Noster State Park, Johnson County communities, and the Johnson County Commission. The Coalition has plans to connect the Spirit Trail to more communities and US Bicycle Route 51 as it becomes established by the Missouri Bicycle Federation.

The standard guide to bicycle facilities design is the AASHTO Bike Guide.  It contains the basic guidance for trail markings, signs, and bike lanes.
